ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM (Porto)

It’s with a great pleasure, the Coordination of KISMIF International Conference announces the Advanced Seminar ANOTHER MUSIC IN A DIFFERENT ROOM to be held in Porto, between July 14th and July 16th, 2014. The organisation of this Advanced Seminar will be undertaken by the Research Project Keep It Simple, Make It Fast! (PTDC/CS-SOC/118830/2010). The opportunity to initiate the Advanced Seminar is related to the realization of KISMIF International Conference, and the possibility of deepening both theoretical and methodological questions in both proximity and dialogue with some of the main world references of the urban musical scenes.

Object
State of the art of urban musical scenes. This advanced seminar is the result of a series of developed works in the last decade within the framework of social sciences, namely Sociology of Culture, Sociology of Arts, Sociology of Youth, Urban Sociology and Sociology of Music. Hence, it is important to understand the importance, functioning, process, the agents, characteristics, genres and subgenres of the current urban music scenes. This will lead to a insightful debate about its mains aspects and structuring guidelines.
Since the publication of the of the emblematic book Music Scenes: Local, Translocal, and Virtual by Andy Bennett and Richard A. Peterson in the last decade, this will be the first decisive moment of systematization of the transformations of music scenes from the presentation of this work until now. The music scenes invite us to map the territory of the city in new ways while, at the same time, defining types of activity whose relationship with the territory is not easily expressed. There exists a contradiction between the growing visibility of the urban music scenes and its persistent illegitimacy as a sociological object of investigation. Such a contradiction is a research challenge to pursuit.

– Lecturers, researches and students who are interested in music, youth, gender, ageing, underground music scenes, DIY careers, cultural management, policies and studies.
– Representatives of public national and trans-national institutions dealing with culture, music or urban music scenes.
– Professionals working for or with private and public cultural institutions.
– Curious people who would like to now more about the subject.
– A maximum of 40 participants will be admitted.

Results
This Advanced Seminar will be a fruitful space for ideas, discussions and, therefore, for a great developments on scientific knowledge. So, it’s our intention to share all this scientific dynamic with the world in order to contribute to a larger debate on music, youth, lifestyles, culture, cultural scenes, music scenes. In this context, the and discussions held in the Advanced Seminar, both by lecturers and participants, will be published in a Collaborative e-book.

Fees
The tuition fee is
– €280 per person, until June 1st, 2014.
– €300 per person, until June 20th, 2014.
